Background:
Private Eric Barnes served bravely as a member of the 2nd Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He endured significant hardships as a prisoner of war in the Far East. This service is dedicated to his memory and the sacrifices he made.
Fifty Years of Waiting for Closure: It has been fifty years since Private Eric Barnes passed away. During World War II, as a Far East Prisoner of War (FEPOW), he faced unimaginable conditions. The treatment of FEPOWs was harsh and often inhumane, involving forced labour, inadequate food, and medical care, as well as physical and psychological abuse. Despite these adversities, Private Barnes demonstrated remarkable courage and resilience.
Family's Journey to Closure: After decades of unanswered questions and a long search for information, Private Barnes's family will finally receive the closure they have sought for so long. This dedication service honours his bravery and sacrifice and provides a moment of solace and recognition for his family.
